Overview

"Since the Galibore camp area declared as a Sanctuary,  fishing is banned"

The Galibore Fishing & Nature Camp Run by Jungle Lodges & Resorts, a unit of Karnataka Tourism, the Galibore Fishing and Nature Camp is tucked away literally far from the maddening crowd, deep in the deciduous forests about ten km from Sangam, on the banks of the River Cauvery. There is no habitation of any kind for miles around and the only sounds are the birdcalls and the whistling of the wind. Indeed the place gets its name from a windy hillock called Galibore, situated just behind the camp.

The Camp is in the middle of wilderness overlooking the River Cauvery, surrounded by hills. The Camp itself is covered with trees lining both sides of the river. This is indeed a rough country. This is ideal for those who want total privacy and no crowd.

Accomodation

This Camp has 12 luxurious tented cottages with attached bath. However, there is no electricity here. We provide only hurricane/ solar lamps, which add to the rustic nature of the place. Located sufficiently away from any habitation, Galibore offers complete peace and tranquility.

Facilities

Sit back under a gazebo and tuck into a buffet lunch or dinner, among other hungry souls like you. While breakfast is generally a quiet affair, as you savour the view and the natural ambience along with the food, the evening barbecue by the riverside is more spirited and lively. As twilight dissolves into the night, a bonfire is lit and while you recline on a lawn chair or swing leisurely in a hammock, preparations are afoot for the barbecue - of grilled chicken, fish or vegetables.

Hammocks are fixed outside each tent and hut for those who would like to laze or read a book in the open. A safe tumbling net is provided for guests to have a rollicking time.

Our hospitable naturalists and staff, ever willing to cater to your needs, will help you discover the subtle facets of nature - in its own mysterious ways.

Activities

In South India, as the Cauvery River flows out of the Western Ghats to Tamil Nadu plains, it cuts deep gorges and creates vast rapids, many pools and thus holding areas for the huge Mahseer. JLR has exclusive rights to vast stretches of the Cauvery. Four different kinds of Mahseer are found in these waters – Silver, Gold, balck and Pink. However, in light of decreasing sizes and numbers of good specimens, 'Catch-and-Release' has become a necessary practice. Other fish often found are carp , catfish and many small ones useful as bait.

Guests are also advised to bring with them a cap, sunscreen, dark glasses, shorts, good shoes to taken on the water and personal medical kit. We request all our foreign clientele to adhere to all safety precautions and ensure that they get all their inoculations prior to their visit to the Camp.

Wildlife

Mammals that are spotted around the Camp include leopard, elephants, wild pigs, sambar, spotted deers, the highly endangered grizzled giant squirrel, Malabar giant squirrel and jackals.

Reptiles that can be sighted are marsh crocodile, turtles (Leith’s Soft Shelled Turtle, an endemic species is found in these waters), chameleon, python, cobra, russell's viper and banded krait. However, the Mahseer fish is the main attraction of the waters of River Cauvery

Over 200 species of birds have been identified around the camp. Among the water-based birds, you can spot the grey-headed fishing eagle, spot billed duck, small pied kingfisher, black-bellied river tern, osprey, and many more. There are also a number of rare land-based birds such as the honey buzzard, tawny eagle, pied crested cuckoo, etc.

Season

The best time to visit is just after the monsoon, between August and February, when the river is swollen and the forest and the surroundings are rich with green vegetation. This time is ideal for bird watchers too, as river terns, fishing eagles, wood peckers, king fishers, and plenty of other species flock here in large numbers. However, at other times water recedes to reveal wide sand banks where you could laze in the evenings or wade in the many lagoons created by the ebbing water. Summers (March - June) can be very warm, especially in the afternoons.

Location

 JLR_Galibore_map

Exactly hundred kilometres from Bangalore, a signpost at Kanakapura guides you to turn left into a village road that’ll take you to Sangam, the confluence of the two rivers Arkavathi and Cauvery. From here, following another signpost, it’s a short drive of about ten kilometres on a gravelly track, through some desolate, wooded terrain, to the Camp. Though it is an unmetalled road, we have ensured that cars can reach Galibore. By the way, this place is 6km down stream of Muttatti village.
