The “Khashi of South India”, Gokarna lies at the confluence of the Aghanashini and Gangavalli rivers and is cradled between the Sahyadri’s and the Arabian Sea. Its timeless temples and beguiling beaches draw a steady stream of pilgrims and tourists. The Om Beach that traces the shape of the Hindu symbol Om is the most popular of Gokarna’s Beaches and lends its name to the Om Beach Resort perched on the slopes of hillock overlooking a verdant valley. While Gokarna’s temples transcend eras its beaches are throbbing with life. The famous Om Beach, the less known Kudle Beach, the quiet Half Moon Beach and the pristine Paradise Beach are four scenic strips of sand, sandwiched between the hills and the sea. The villages of Sanikatta and Tadadi are located in close proximity to Gokarna. Manufacturing salt for over three centuries, Sanikatta is the oldest salt manufacturing site in Karnataka. Tadadi has a fishing harbour and a fish processing plant set up through an Indo-Danish collaboration. With rugged trekking trails and great outdoors, the adventurous can embark on paths of discovery in and around Gokarna.
Gokarna brings together the experience of a sea-side destination and a getaway in the hills. Tucked between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, Gokarna is bewitching symphony of sun, sand and sea. Its beguiling beaches makes it a much sought after destination. The famed Om Beach, the lesser-known Kudle Beach, the quiet Half Moon Beach and the pristine Paradise Beach are four scenic, popular strips of sand sandwiched between the hills. You can amble along the scenic strips of sand, or plunge into the azure waters, trek in the rocky hills or just sit back and enjoy nature’s beauty.
Not just the beaches, Gokarna is also famous for its timeless temples. Known as the “Khashi of South India” Gokarna abounds with mythical tales. The Mahabaleshwara Temple and the Maha Ganapathi Temple are the most popular of the many sacred temples in Gokarna. Most temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and hence the festival of Shivratri is celebrated with great fervour. Religious ceremonies and cultural events are organised as a part of the festivities which span for nine days.
The Tadadi village near Gokarna has a fishing harbour and a fish processing plant which was set up by a team of experts from Denmark. The Danish team that worked at Tadadi resided in Konkan style cottages built on the slopes of a hill overlooking the valley. These rustic cottages are now converted into the Om Beach Resort that overlooks the intimidating horizon.
With a unique blend of the ancient and the modern, Gokarna is a destination with a difference.
The best time to visit Gokarna is between October and May. The summer months of April and May are warm. The coastal town of Gokarna receives heavy rainfall from June to August.

My journey from Bangalore to Gokarna turned out to be longer than expected. I departed before an extended weekend, so every highway leading away from Bangalore was choked. The sleeper bus wasn’t particularly comfortable, but it gave me my own private space. Private space – a luxury I would both enjoy and seek in the next couple of days.
